For Sale: 1950 VW Split Window Beetle

We have too many projects, and something has to go - although we truly, genuinely hate to sell anything...

This is a really great car - an early 1950 Bordeoux Red VW Split Window Beetle. This thing has always been an absolute keeper - because it is rust free!

This is a partly dismantled project - but all complete! As shown on the picture; A rolling shell with glass and doors on a complete, untouched chassis. ALL other parts are in boxes.

The good:
- Very original, very very solid body.
- Early 1950 Export model with chrome & ivory, yet mechanical brakes
- The nicest color of them all; Bordeux Red (very nice inside - fantastic patina outside)
- Virtually rust-free..floorpans, heater channels - no holes!
- Very nice, complete, original interior (seats and side panels)
- Original, color-coded gas tank
- Original, good doors + hood, engine lid and all 4 fenders - correct!
- All correct, hard-to-find parts are included; Bumpers, lights, chrome, dash, glass, handles...etc. All of it!
- Very nice, untouched, complete (K-mainfold, coffee can and all!) 1950-engine from the same month of production

The not-so-good:
- Rear end / rear apron cut off (sidewalls, shelves and bumper mounts are included)
- Dented front apron (but no rust)
- Missing semaphores and carpets

Our plan was to paint/fade/patinate the fenders/hood/lid and drive it as-is with the cool patina and funky, white speed-stripe as pictured.

Our good Porsche-friend, Kari from Finland has just completed one of the most amazing Pre-A restorations on the planet and guess what he foudn left over in his garage after the work? A set of window frames numbered "722" - which proves they originate from our very own Coupe #10722. Amazing stuff....and now he wants to trade for a speedo and combi-gauge for a late-50-ies 356. The green style made by VDO....anybody have some to offer?

'53 Porsche 356 barn find...

It just never stops to amaze us.... the amount of unrestored classic cars that still exist. Some very few still with the original owner, or their family and yet more in the hands of eraly day collectors that picked them up while they were cheap and plentyful.

This time it is a '53 Porsche Convertible... In many ways the ultimate 356 (all Pre-'52s aside, of course) in our opinion; It has a body that allows for removing the bumpers, it has got the old dash and windscreen, and it has got a symmetrical up-front lighting arrangement. A one-year only feature - and since the cabrio was the lightest, most "raciest" car ...this sample is dying to get some vintage racing treatment.

This weekend hosted the annual "mother of all swap meets" here in Norway - the "Ekeberg Market". Hundreds of sellers, thousands of buyers - this is a really nice event with a history since the 60ies and arranged by the veteran car club of Norway.

During recent years, we find more friends and faces than nuts and bolts...but there is always something.... Last year our big find was the Italmeccanica supercharger, which is bound for our '51 356 - check it out here:

This year, a wonderful airplane belly-tank got us thinking..... A pair of Okrasa-heads hangin' out the sides of it....a "non-shock-tower" front beam off a Kubel up front....wouldn't it be sweet? But this year we left it at that - just think-tanking. Some lucky buyer might have picked it up, although he would have to have been slimmer than us in order to fit in it.

Twin-engined Beetle!

Taking Vintage Speed to a new level: Mr Fittipaldi has a long and quite extreme racing-career and the Screwdrivers of course knew of his VW-beginnings.. His now-restored blue and white Ghia (with the lovely Le Mans number lights...) was a great template when constructing our "Der Thundersodder Spezialer". Then all of a sudden this twin-engined "Monster Beetle" shows up on our screens! Unreal...! Check the intakes, the tyres...the engines....the competitors! Unbeleivable...

What would the history of the automobile have looked like if Ferdinand Porsche would have completed his roadgoing monster back in 1933/34? Inspired by Bernd Rosemeyers success on the racetracks with the Auto Union racers, Porsche coined the idea of something "absolutely-oposite-of-the-Volkswagen" - and designed this unbelievable V-16 street legal monster named the Typ 52. The absolute dream-car of any Porsche-VW fanatic.

Here at the Screwdrivers headquarters, we are totally totally lost in the "Stromlinie"-era of German motoring dating from 1930 to 1955 for the time being. We can't stop thinking, reading and loving the Steyr Typ 50/55, Mercedes 130H/170H, Adler Typ10 Autobahn, the Tatras and the dreamcars that was all part of the "VW"-movement. Funny thing is - Mr Porsche was related to most of them in one way or the other. Watch this blog for more to come...

1951 Tatraplan - STROMLINIE!

Since we left Germany with an empty trailer, we had to check up on an old lead in southern Sweden...

We have a special interest for the "non-revolutionary"-part of the design history of the Volkswagen Beetle. Mr Porsche was a genious - and wise enough to utilize a lot of the contemporary ideas of automotive design, when he had to design "the peoples car" in no time, and for very little money. A court-settlement defined later how he had copied a lot of inventions, ideas and concepts from his friend Hans Ledwinka - chief designer at Tatra in Tschecoslovakia. The big pre-war T87 and T97 V-8 models were the pioneers, yet a much larger and more luxurious car than the VW was to be. Therefore, the post-war "Tatraplan 600" is really the Tatra that has the most in common with the Beetle - rear mounted aircooled boxer 4, tunnell/floorpan-chassis, the unreal "stromlinie"-design and ..... 5x205 bolt pattern.

We struck a deal on this fantastic patina-Tatra and loaded it on our empty trailer and headed north in minus 10 and snowing. In the same family since 1958 and it came with loads of spare parts as well. The front fenders are rusty - the rest is not. It was driven into its storage-place about 15 years ago and it really should not take a whole lot to get running again.

So - we crossed the border into Norway with a big smile on our faces - thanks #7 for a great trip! And thanks a whole whole lot to everybody we met during this great trip.... The Grundmanns, Björn Schewe, Tomasz & driver, Kreutzi, Dieter, Jürgen and Patrick - we will be back.

Headin' north:

Late Monday night: Our towtruck is l-o-a-d-e-d with various parts and "stuff".....it is minus 1 degree and snowing heavily. Every German we see uses summer tyres and traffic avergaes about 7 kmh on the Autobahn. Our GPS is set for an old barn in northern Germany where a Split Karmann is resting waiting for a new owner...yet our ferry over to Sweden is soon to leave..

Our GPS was set for "allow backroads" and in an abandoned forrest we found an amazing abandoned castle. In the end, we manage to spend about 3 minutes with the Karmann and its owner. Enough to decide to leave with an empty trailer. After dark we were the absolute last car to make it onto the DFDS ferry to Gothenburg - phuii...

Dieter Schmidt Lorenz - worth a visit!

If you have not been shopping from http://www.vw-teile.de/ yet - it is about time. Dieter is a true enthusiast himself and has found a unique and "priceless" niche in the hobby - he only deals with genuine, real-deal NOS Volkswagen parts.... and he has been doing it for 20 years with great success. His shelves and warehouse is full of the genuine blue boxes that you were told are rare, but here in the Hamburg shop is a commodity. An amazing selection that is always changing, depending on what he finds. We tested him on a few...."White knobs for Pre-A Porsche vent windows?" .... how many do you want? How about a horn button for a Barndoor? ...-I am sorry but the bow is a little worn, but here it is..... Right off the shelf!! Amazing. Be sure to check in on your next restoration.

What we really liked was the storefront and the amazing showroom... All old and unique sales-equipment, shelves and stuff... very very period correct and very nice. Thanks for the talk Dieter!

Hamburg:

Our good friend Kreutzi from the legendary DFL-club offered a couple of beds and an "advents-stake" to two worn out Screwdrivers - thanks a lot! Kreutzi collects Matchbox-cars amongst other things and he was our perfect guide in Hamburg for a whole day.

Hamburg has a lot to offer for early VW-enthusiasts - but unfortunately the fantastic PROTOTYP museum was closed on the Monday we were there.. But - Himmelservice with its new boss was open for business and our first stop for the day. We picked up a new inner headliner for our '53 Karmann - very good to see the tradition being kept up by a new generation - if you're looking for an interior for your vintage VW, there is no better place.

Rometsch #225:

The Rometsch Room in the Grundmann Collection is one of our favorite places on earth and this is where virtually every artifact from "the real" Rometsch in Berlin now resides. Drawings, pictures, tools, parts, build-logs, two "Rose of Geneva" and...cars. An amazing collection and a great place to leave our banana #225.

The steel and wood have been welded and re-made by our good friend The Norwegian Blacksmith (try google) over the last few years and now it is time for Traugott and his team to straighten and correct and then re-skin with old and new aluminium. We are really looking forward to next time we bring our trailer to Hessisch....!

VW 38/06:

While in "mecca", we had to approach "the alter" and see in flesh the single car that has meant the most for the VW-hobby the last few years. VW38/06 is the sixth Beetle of the first Porsche prototype series that had the final shape of the Beetle. Very little separates this design from what was produced up until November-1952, but it is all in the details.... And the details and handcraft that has gone into this unbelievable restoration is nothing short of a miracle. When we stopped by, most parts had been found and/or fabricted and the chrome was just being sent off to Poland before the body left for the painter a few days later.

An amazing job by Traugott (the thinker) and Mathias (the metal-man) and Christian (parts-hunting) that has gone into this car. A single reason enough to plan your trip to Camberg, if you have not already...

The unwrapping of our "Norway Christmas present" could start.... Rometsch #225 needs some skilfull massaging of its aluminium skin and we are lucky enough that the expert team of Traugott-Christian-Mathias has offered to help - thank you oh-so much for this opportunity!

Based on the very interesting thread on theSamba (where else?), we thought we would give a little update on the Screwdrivers' Rometsch #225 restoration.

Beeskow #225 was first found in a metal recycling yard in Dallas, TX back in 1992, then went on to a backyard in Phoenix before we bought it in 1998. After collecting parts, patterns and dimensions for several years, work started in "The Blacksmith's" atelier back in 2006. In 3 years all metal and woodwork was done and what a job..

The Screwdrivers' network of VW-observers is wide and always in a spot near you... Last weekend, within just a few kilometers distance and just some hours difference, two of our friends mug-shot these two collectables at local gas stations in Trivelige Troendelag, right in the middle of Norway...

First - a lucky new owner is bringing his 54 Barndoor LH-cargo door Panel home from the forrest. Going from the north to the south - can you guess who the lucky man is?

Then... this green Oval seems to see daily drives in the northern part of Gudbrandsdalen. it was parked outside a Statoil-station as the owner was shopping for chocolate.

The barns, forrests or streets will never run out of gold-to-be-found... Send us your spy-shots..

They are roughly doing Oslo-Lillehammer-Dovre-Røros-Trondheim-Hommelvik-Atlanterhavsveien-West Coast-Bergen-Voss-Kristiansand the coming weeks, so if you are along this route and have something interesting to tell them or show them - give us a shout.

#3 brought out his "I'll-never-sell-that-thing-again"-bus for the annual TroenderTreff-show last weekend. And what better way to meet the summer is there than ...... some good old TyrePorn! He drug out a pair of old, tall and square 650x15 bias-blys and wrapped them onto his 5,5 untouched SprintStars. A little slip-n-slide to get them under the wheel arches and off to the show he went. Very very period correct - thumbs up!

Dunlop Racing tyres give high value for high money, both in looks and performance. This recently arrived set is going on to a friends' Zwitter race car.... We will be testing them out on a couple of our ongoing projects as they pass through our hands. We are in love!

Screwdrivers' has secured a real rarity for this season... The "HPD Special" was handbuilt in Sweden back in 1958 and has gone through an extensive 2500-hour restoration job. The builder had an amazing combination of skills, donor-parts and a surprisingly good eye for design. Based on a shortened Beetle chassis from 1949, the the car is very much inspired by the notorious Porsche 356 Carrera GTL Abarth. It is presently going through a little update and getting ready for SCC 2010...and eventually the BC2011 Oldspeed Challenge. Stay tuned for more.

The Screwdriver-barn is "too full"...so something has gotta go. 1938 Steyr Type 55 restoration project FOR SALE.

The Steyr Type 55 is in many ways the granfather of the Beetle. The project was initiated by Ferdinand Porsche when he worked for Steyr 1929-1931, and the car came out in 1934. Unbelievable "stromlinie"-design, yet a project not for the faint-hearted.

#5 just bought back his first car... He first bought it when he was 17 years old, cal-looked it as much as his wallet could afford and sold it after some years to finance new projects. It basically slept in a garae since then and half a year ago he bought it back. He is "refreshening it" as-is and completing it to become the car he always wanted it to be. Perfect 80ies Cal Looker - one for the road this summer. Way to go JHU!

We are not sure who sent us these pictures, but if we did - we would give them/you a hug! What could be better than an untouched, battered old Speedster....straight out of the barn? This looks to be somewhere in Europe, and the car is to die for.

...and both the VW-market and the cars themselves are starting to move. Last night we picked up an "old love affair" on behalf of Screwdriver-friend "Soddli". This Zwitter was saved in the basement of one of the largest VW-dealerships ever since it was traded for a newer Beetle sometime in the early sixties. Very very nice condition! It was one of the only Splits on the road back in "Screwdrivers-cradle" (city of Trondheim) about 20 years ago - and now it is back in the family again.

We picked up a really cool 60ies Go Cart the other day - thanks to our good friend FINN.no. Obviously built on the USA sometime during the mid-60ies...mateallic blue with black and gold pinstriping...and center-mounted seat is all cool. However - the 3-bolt magnesium wheels, tall-n-square tyres with white letters is what did it for us.

Something for the kids....or.....how about it on a custom built small trailer (we know of some...)...behind a Panel logoed as a service truck?

Screwdriver's friend TT at Norwegian Hammerworks is at it again... His '52 Split is up for a mix of custom 'n hot rod...combined with German "stromlinie"-features - and we can't wait to see it done. As a taste of things to come....here is the mock up of the engine; All handmade alu tin surrounding a Type 4 block with a complete kit of hens teeth .... sorry Hilborn, that is.

After about 4 years of negotiations, we finally scored some great parts for an upcoming project last night.... This genuine Schwimmwagen-propellar-aggregate was pulled off a Schwimmer back in 1946 when the vehicle was purchased from the Norwegian Army to be converted to private use. It was picked up by a man that wanted to use it on his fishingboat back then....stored inside a stack of fire-wood from '46 to '65, then bought by an early German war vehicle collector. It then sat in his barn from '64 until yesterday..... now it will form a fundamental cornerstone of an upcoming Screwdrivers-project. Stay tuned.
